Dugout: one carved block. The top is carved from a single block of paulownia with the fibres unbroken, so vibration travels whole: fuller resonance and a longer decay. The cost is low timber yield, a long cycle and exacting wood selection, which typically puts a dugout at several times the price of a laminated instrument of the same size. It suits players with definite tonal demands, and collectors.
Laminated: boards glued together. The most common construction. It is efficient and consistent, and with carefully selected stock and fine assembly it can still produce an excellent voice — a well-made laminated performance guzheng is entirely sufficient. Its purpose is to deliver uniform quality at controlled cost, which usually makes it the best value.
Veneer: good looks, limited sound. A cheap substrate carries a decorative wood skin. The ceiling is clearly below the other two, and this construction belongs to the budget and décor market. A simple first check when buying: follow the grain at the panel edge and under the bridges to see whether it continues naturally, and tap the top to hear whether it sounds hollow.
In short: **a dugout buys the ceiling of the sound, a laminated instrument buys value, and a veneer instrument buys price and appearance**. The right choice follows your budget and stage, not "the more expensive the better". For most learners, a well-assembled laminated guzheng serves far better than a carelessly made dugout.
