Procuring guzhengs for a training studio is not the same exercise as buying one instrument for home. A personal purchase follows taste; an institutional one asks whether dozens of instruments will survive three years without major problems, whether teaching standards stay uniform, and whether someone answers the phone when something breaks. These five criteria are the order in which we actually evaluate studio projects.
1. Consistency before individual tone. If a dozen instruments in the same room differ noticeably in tone and action, the reference point for demonstration and practice is lost and teaching suffers. For batch procurement, confirm that the assembly standard is uniform across the model; playing a sample tells you more than any spec sheet.
2. Durability and maintenance cost. Studio instruments wear several times faster than home ones: strings, bridges, knocks and humidity swings. Ask three questions when choosing a model: are bridges easy to re-seat, are strings easy to replace, and how tolerant is the soundboard construction to humidity variation. Every avoided repair is saved labour.
3. After-sales and parts response. A studio cannot afford a two-week return-to-factory loop. Confirm that spare strings and bridges can be shipped quickly, that minor issues can be resolved by remote guidance, and that there is a clear replacement channel for batch problems. Getting this in writing matters more than a few points off the unit price.
4. Batch pricing and payment terms. Volume discounts depend on quantity, model mix and delivery. Ask for a complete quotation — parts and freight included — rather than comparing bare instrument prices, and confirm whether staged delivery is possible for new branch openings.
5. Tuning and teaching support. New instruments need more frequent tuning in the first months, so budget staff time for it. Ask the supplier for basic tuning training or video guidance, and include care instructions in the handover to students' parents.
If your studio is preparing an annual purchase, send us the quantity, student age groups and room conditions and we will return a formal quotation against all five criteria, including batch pricing, parts and lead time.
